TOKYO: THE GLOBAL HYDROGEN HUB
From fuel cell buses on city streets to the world's largest fleet of home fuel cells, Tokyo is building the first large-scale hydrogen society — and its playbook is Commercial First.
Why Tokyo Leads
Tokyo did not wait for hydrogen cars to go mainstream. It put hydrogen to work where it displaces diesel first: buses, trucks, port equipment, and the boilers and fuel cells inside buildings.
Commercial First Strategy
Tokyo targets roughly 10,000 fuel-cell commercial vehicles — buses, trucks, taxis and garbage trucks — with about 100 commercial-vehicle-compatible stations by the mid-2030s. Passenger cars come second, where hydrogen adds value over batteries.
An Olympic Hydrogen Legacy
Tokyo 2020 ran on hydrogen: green hydrogen from Fukushima powered the Olympic Village, hundreds of FCEVs served the Games, and the former Village at Harumi now supplies hydrogen by pipeline to residential blocks — a Japan first.
The World's Largest Home-Fuel-Cell Market
Japan has deployed more than 500,000 ENE-FARM residential fuel cells since 2009 — Tokyo Gas is the largest installer. Every Tokyo home with an ENE-FARM is a tiny power plant.
